Ventuno ore di aereo per raggiungere l'Australia, continente "giovane", che ospita, per la prima volta nella storia, una Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù. Le aspettative sono alte: si parla di 500mila pellegrini attesi per la messa conclusiva di domenica 20 luglio. E aspettando Ratzinger la città di Sydney comincia a colorarsi di papaboys provenienti da 170 Paesi di tutto il mondo. L'Italia è il terzo Paese rappresentato: con 10mila giovani, è dietro solo agli australiani e agli statunitensi.

«Essere prete è incompatibile con gli abusi sessuali, con questo comportamento che contraddice la santità». Lo ha detto il Papa sull'aereo che lo porta in Australia, rispondendo alla domanda se ha intenzione di chiedere scusa agli australiani per gli abusi sessuali commessi da alcuni sacerdoti in Australia, come ha fatto recentemente negli Stati Uniti.
«È essenziale per la Chiesa rappacificare, prevenire, aiutare e vedere la colpa insita in questo problema» ha agiunto, «deve essere chiaro che il vero sacerdozio non è compatibile» con gli abusi sessuali «perchè i preti sono al servizio di nostro Signore».

Today is starting the longest trip by Pope Benedict XVI. Twenty-one-hours of air travel to reach Australia, the young continent which is hosting, for the first time in history, the World Youth Day. The expectations are high, an estimate of 500 thousand pilgrims will attend the final mass on Sunday, July 20th. And waiting for Ratzinger the city of Sydney is starting to be colored by the "Popeboys" coming from 170 countries all over the world. Italy is the third most represented country , with 10 thousand youths, behind only those from Australia and USA.
«To be a priest is incompatible with sexual abuses, a behavior which contradicts sainthood". The Pope said that in the plane carrying him to Australia, answering the question if he had the intention to apologize for the sexual abuses committed by some priests in Australia, as he did recently in the United States.
"It's essential for the church to conciliate, prevent, help and see the faults related to this problem" adding " it must be clear that real priesthood is not compatible with sexual abuses because the priests are at the service of our Lord".
