The Marist religious order has apologised to the victims of sexual abuse by a former teacher of Canberra's Marist College.

John William Chute will spend two years in jail for molesting six students in the 1980s.

John William Chute taught at Canberra's Marist College for close to 30 years.

The 76-year-old, who taught under the name of Brother Kostka, was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court today for sexually assaulting students of his religion class who were aged between 12 and 16.

The Marist Brothers released a statement apologising to the Catholic Church community of Canberra for the scandal and embarrassment it has caused.

"All Brother Kostka's victims are relieved that he accepted responsibility for his abuse and that the criminal case is finished," the lawyer who represents the victims, Jason Parkinson, said.

On his release in 2010, Chute will serve 12 months of weekend detention and be placed on a suspended sentence.
