A meeting in Orlando between presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Catholic bishops has been scrubbed because of logistical problems, an organizer said.

McCain planned to meet tonight at a private reception with bishops who are in Orlando for the semiannual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. But an official with the Catholic Citizens Committee, which was organizing the meeting, said his group ran into trouble putting the event together on relatively short notice.

The Catholic Citizens Committee had also talked with Democrat Barack Obama's campaign about a meeting on Saturday, said Jack St. Martin, the executive vice president of the Catholic group. St. Martin's group is separate from the bishops organization, but planned to host a reception and invite bishops to attend.

"John McCain's campaign placed a great emphasis on the importance of spending time talking to the bishops…Just logistically, we weren't ready to host an event of that magnitude," St. Martin said.

St. Martin said his group hopes to set up future "issues-based" talks with the presidential candidates.
