Man Accused of Secret Peeping Was Church Youth Leader WXII June 12, 2008 http://www.wxii12.com/news/16589528/detail.html YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — The husband accused of filming his wife's friends while they used a tanning bed in the couple's basement and sexually assaulting two minors was a longtime member and youth leader at Peace Haven Baptist Church, WXII12 News has learned. Man Accused Of Peeping Was Youth Leader More than 100 charges were filed this week against Tony Gray Sloop, 49, of Hamptonville, including sexual abuse of two girls under the age of 13 and secret peeping. The photos and videos, which allegedly were taken from cameras installed in pinholes in a basement and a bathroom and according to investigators, show women of a variety of ages. Peace Haven Baptist's pastor, Bruce Freeman, said nothing about Sloop's actions or personality alerted them there might be any problem until the first charges were made involving a young girl at the church. "We saw them in here together in church. (But) the mom was nearby — the wife was nearby," Freeman said. A warrant says Sloop's relationship with the girl came to light after the girl's mother and a youth pastor noticed that she was receiving frequent phone calls and text messages from Sloop, even while on a church field trip. Freeman said Sloop had been a member and was involved in various ministries since the late '80s. Sloop is accused of setting up an elaborate videotaping system and recording video of women who were using his wife's tanning bed. Yadkin County Sheriff Mike Cain said Sloop kept an extensive filing system of the tapes, which included footage the two minors he's accused of abusing – nine females in all. "He would have designated times for people to be there," Cain said. "I understand he had them in categories and libraries and each victim had their own tape, so to speak." Back across town, Freeman said the church is beginning the healing process. "It's going to take some time," he said. "It's like throwing a rock into a pond. (It) ripples over time." |
