Leader of N.M. Doomsday Cult Charged United Press International May 7, 2008 http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2008/05/07/leader_of_nm_doomsday_cult_charged/5889/ ALBUQUERQUE, May 7 — Police in New Mexico are holding the self-professed Messiah of a doomsday cult on multiple charges of sexual contact with minors. Wayne Bent, also known as Michael Travesser, 66, said in an Internet posting that he has committed no crime and compared his arrest to the persecution of Jesus, The Albuquerque Journal reported Wednesday. State police arrested Bent at his Strong City, N.M., compound Tuesday on charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The magistrate who signed his arrest warrant set bail at $500,000 cash. Arraignment is scheduled Thursday in Clayton. Bent has denied having sex with minors but has admitted "lying with naked virgins." "The current upheaval over me ... was the same for Jesus," he wrote. "Jesus had not committed any crimes, so the authorities had to invent some crimes to crucify him over." |
