Lumberton Parents Should Attend Meeting on Monday Courier-Post April 27, 2008 http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080427/OPINION/804270324/1046 District wise to host meeting for parents about arrested teacher. The arrest of popular teacher and coach Joseph Macanga has certainly been a complete shock for students and parents in Lumberton. The former Catholic priest was Lumberton Middle School's teacher of the year in 2003, and a popular figure in the school. Now he's facing federal charges of sending and receiving images of child pornography on his home computer. He could get up to 10 years in prison, if convicted. It's sad that this is the world we live in; that parents now have the awful task of trying to explain child pornography to their children. The district is hosting an informal meeting at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the middle school auditorium. Administrators are asking for parents to come without children. Parents will break into small groups and talk with counselors. Because of the nature of these allegations, and because Macanga was a veteran teacher who most kids in the school have interacted with at one time or another, it's important that parents be given plenty of opportunity to talk to each other and to school officials about the allegations. |
