A priest from Wigan has been charged with a string of sex offences.

Father William Green, priest at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in New Springs was arrested late last year over allegations dating back decades.

Fr Green, 66, who has been at Holy Family in Cale Lane for 15 years, left his position at the church to take administrative leave while the police conducted their inquiries.

Worshippers at the church were told about the claims during a mass by a bishop from the Diocese of Salford.

Fr Green, of Cale Lane, Aspull, faces 28 charges of indecent assault and four of indec

ency with children. The charges follow an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse at St Bedes College in Manchester during the 1970s and early 1980s.

One of the charges relates to abuse that allegedly took place at St Margaret Mary's Primary School in New Moston in the 1960s.

Greater Manchester Police's investigation has been carried out with the full support and co-operation of the Salford Diocese Child Protection

Commission and St Bedes College and Manchester City Council.

Greater Manchester Police has set up a dedicated helpline for anyone effected by this investigation, which can be called 24 hours a day on 0161 856 6051.

The Salford Diocese Child Protection Commission also has a dedicated helpline on 0161 832 8317 or 0773 0899978 which is available 24 hours a day.

Fr Green has been bailed until April 30, when he will appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court.
