(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - Clergy sex abuse survivor Bernie McDaid of Lynn, Massachusetts was on the the abuse victims to meet privately with Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday.

McDaid said he shook the pope's hand, told him he was an altar boy and had been abused by a priest in the sacristy of his parish.
The abuse, he told Benedict, was not only sexual but spiritual.
"I think it marks a new time in this whole abuse crisis," said McDaid.
"I was lucky enough to meet the pontiff...this happened to us...we're not numbers and stats, we're people," said McDaid.
McDaid spoke with NECN's Scot Yount about his meeting with the pope.
