Accused Pedophile Priest Szantyr Reappears in Court NECN April 11, 2008 http://www.necn.com/Boston/New-England/Accused-pedophile-priest-Szantyr-reappears-in-court/1207957233.html [with video] (Katie Daly, NECN: Worcester, Mass.) - Frustration continues for the alleged victims of accused pedophile priest Reverend John Szantyr. Szantyr was back in a Worcester courtroom Friday. A judge says he needs more time to decide if Szantyr is competent to stand trails. Katie Daly has the latest. Script: Sitting in a wheelchair, Reverend John Szantyr appeared in Worcester District Court. The former priest in the Worcester Diocese is accused of molesting 2 Worcester alter boys in the 1980's. At Friday's competency hearing, the question was whether or not Szantyr is competent to stand trial. Szantyr's lawyer argued his client is incapable of it. Szantyr's brother, Paul was called in as a witness. He said his brother is suffering physically and mentally.....incapable of comprehending basic questions. The prosecution pushed for Judge Richard Donie to review statements Szantyr made to a doctor during a medical evaluation. It says Szantyr gave correct answers when a doctor asked him to remember his past dating back to childhood. One of the alleged victims, Michael Chesnis was in the courtroom. He has been waiting for Szantyr to stand trial since charges were brought against the former priest 5 years ago. "I don't know who to believe or who not to believe, but all I can do is keep showing up and hope that justice will have her way." The judge has taken the case under advisement and will produce a final report of competency May 9th. |
