The New Orleans Archdiocese released its plan to for local churches.

The Archdiocese detailed the plan in a press release:

Parishes to be Re-opened (3)

These parishes were temporarily closed by the 2006 Pastoral Plan and will now reopen.

  • Our Lady of Lourdes, Violet

  • St. Bernard, St. Bernard

  • St. Thomas, Pointe a la Hache

New Parishes (2)

This list represents two situations in which two existing parishes will be closed to create a new parish to be named by the parishioners.

St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, New Orleans, and St. Raphael the Archangel, New Orleans (note: the territory of St. Thomas the Apostle on UNO's campus will be part of the new parish)

Nativity of Our Lord, Kenner, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Kenner (by: June 30, 2009)

Parishes to be Merged (27)

The following list contains the parishes that will be part of a merger. The top parish is designated as the place of worship for the newly combined parish. In all cases, except St. Louis Cathedral and St. Mary's Chapel, the parishioners will have the opportunity to meet and decide on whether to change the name of the parish to represent the new community.

Parishes to Become Missions (4)

This list contains parishes that will become a mission of a neighboring parish. In these cases, the church itself will remain open as a place of worship as part of the existing parish.

  • Infant Jesus of Prague, Harvey, to become a mission of St. Martha, Harvey

  • Holy Guardian Angels, Bridge City, to become a mission of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, Westwego

  • St. Anthony, Gretna, to become a mission of Holy Name of Mary, New Orleans (Algiers)

  • St. Pius X, Crown Point, to become a mission of St. Anthony, Lafitte

Parishes to Share a Pastor (8)

These parishes will continue to operate independently with independent lay leadership and maintain all parish activities, but will now share a pastor.

  • Our Lady of Lourdes, Violet, and St. Bernard, St. Bernard

  • Our Lady of the Angels, Waggaman, and St. Bonaventure, Avondale

  • St. Anthony, Luling, and St. Mark, Ama

  • St. Gertrude, Des Allemands, and St. John the Baptist, Paradis

Parishes to Become Campus Ministry Centers (2)

These parishes currently operate on the campuses of local universities. Under this plan they will no longer be considered parishes, but Campus Ministry Centers. Pastoral services and Masses will go on as already scheduled.

  • St. Thomas the Apostle, New Orleans (University of New Orleans)

  • St. Thomas the More, New Orleans (Tulane University)

Parishes in the East Jefferson Deanery, East and West St. Tammany Deaneries and the River Parishes Deanery should not expect to be assigned Parochial Vicars in the near future.
