A former Downers Grove youth minister was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for molesting an underage parishioner.

Edward E. Greene, 38, of Asheboro, N.C., pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault of the 17-year-old girl while she attended Marquette Manor Baptist Church and its school.

The abuse occurred in 1998, but the allegations didn't come to light until several years later after she told a counselor. Greene was charged in 2005.

He faced up to 15 years behind bars. Greene must register as a convicted sex offender upon his release from prison.

DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said Greene abused his position of trust and authority within the church.

"He took advantage of a young girl who looked up to him to satisfy his own sexual desires," Birkett said. "He betrayed her trust and he betrayed the trust placed in him by the (church)."

Greene is not the first Marquette Manor church official to face criminal allegations. Similar allegations are pending against John Puga, 36, of Aurora, a former school basketball coach, on suspicion he had a sexual relationship with an underage church member in late 2001 into 2002.

A third man, Frank Stima, 64, an ex-deacon who lives out-of-state, received a 60-day jail sentence and two years' probation after he pleaded guilty in 2006 to the criminal sexual abuse of a minor within the church.
