ROCKVILLE — An ordained minister has been arrested on charges of sex offense and child abuse of a female church choir member in Gaithersburg who was 14 at the time.

Montgomery County detectives had Timothy Chun-Chock Mann, 47, arrested in Hoover, Ala., where he was director of the choir with a Birmingham, Ala., congregation.

Police in Alabama served Mann with a warrant as a fugitive from justice in conjunction with the Maryland arrest warrant.

He was arrested and held at an Alabama correctional facility before his release with the stipulation that he turn himself in to Montgomery County Police by March 21. He turned himself in on March 20 and was released on $100,000 bail.

Montgomery County Police said Mann joined the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg as an ordained minister in December 1991. He worked as the minister of music and directed the church's youth choir.

Between December 1992 and the summer of 1996, Mann engaged in inappropriate sexual acts with a female youth choir member, according to police. The abuse started when the victim was 14 years old and most of the incidents occurred in Mann's office at the church.

Detectives interviewed the choir member, now 29. On March 7, they contacted Mann at his home in Hoover and on March 11, obtained an arrest warrant charging him with third-degree sex offense and child abuse.

Anyone with information about inappropriate sexual contact Mann may have had with juveniles should call police at 240-773-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.
