BOULDER — A former church worker accused of having a sexual relationship with a teen in his charge accepted a plea deal Friday that will send him to prison for a year.

Peter Kim, 40, pleaded guilty to violating bail bond conditions, sexual exploitation of a child, and attempted sexual assault by a person in a position of trust. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped several additional charges.

Kim was the director of youth ministries at Longmont's Central Presbyterian Church and the girl was a member of the youth ministry.

A jury heard Kim's case last year and deadlocked after a week of testimony from witnesses who said Kim and the teenage girl had a relationship that was obviously close and that many suspected had crossed the line.

Kim was scheduled to be retried in June on charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and with a pattern of abuse. Friday's plea will spare him from the retrial.
