Yesterday's vicious weather cancelled hearings at the Cornwall Public Inquiry.

Staff Sgt. Garry Derochie was scheduled to begin his fifth straight day on the stand.

Since joining the Cornwall police in 1976, Derochie has been responsible for conducting a number of internal investigations - among them, a 1993 review of how the force handled sexual abuse allegations by David Silmser.

Silmser received a $32,000 payout from the Alexandria-Cornwall Roman Catholic Diocese in exchange for not pressing criminal or civil charges against a local priest.

His file was later turned over to the Children's Aid Society by former Cornwall cop Perry Dunlop.

Derochie should return to the stand when the inquiry resumes this morning.

A public workshop on whether Ontario needs an ombudsman to handle the complaints of sexual abuse victims was also cancelled, said Colleen Parrish, the inquiry's director of policy.

The workshop was organized under Phase 2 of the inquiry, which has a mandate to foster healing and reconciliation in the Cornwall area.

It has been tentatively rescheduled for April, Parrish said.
