AMELIA - "Sono appena tornato da un viaggio durato due mesi, lo sapete. Ho visto l'inferno. Bambini di 5 anni morire di Aids. Ragazzini di 10 anni domandarmi "che ne sarà di me?" L'inferno non esiste nell'aldilà: esiste qui, su questa terra, dovrebbero capirlo quelli che stanno nei palazzoni, laggiù, in Vaticano, dove c'è il migliore paradiso possibile, quello dei ricchi e dei potenti. Rigetto il concetto del Vaticano come centro religioso: è un centro politico, qualche volta ambiguo e fuorviante. Altra cosa è la chiesa di Cristo. Altra cosa è la fede", dice Pierino Gelmini.

Poi aggiunge: "Gli intrallazzi non sono fede. Bisogna tornare a Cristo non al cesaro-papismo. Siamo arrivati al punto in cui parliamo più del papa che del Cristo". E' un fiume in piena Gelmini, - ormai ex prete dopo la decisione del Vaticano di accogliere la sua domanda di riduzione allo stato laicale - quando ieri, nel pomeriggio, nella Comunità Incontro di Amelia, seduto su un alto scranno in una sala affrescata con la storia della Comunità in stile murales di Città del Messico, microfono in mano, incontra i suoi ragazzi.

La giornata era iniziata con la messa tenuta da don Enzo nella cappella. Dopo quattro chiacchiere in cortile, qualche sigaretta, le corse dei bambini, era proseguita con il pranzo comunitario nel refettorio: un minuto di silenzio prima di mangiare e un'animazione da gran giorno. Amici, parenti, ragazzi, non parlano d'altro: lui, papà Pierino, "un santo", "un giusto", uno che "non si merita quello che gli hanno buttato addosso", "uno che ha dato la sua vita per gli altri".

"Io amo don Pierino" racconta Christian, venti anni compiuti l'altro ieri, romeno, salvato dalle fogne di Bucarest da Mino D'Amato e dalla sua associazione, portato in Italia che, malato di Aids dall'età di otto anni, pesava venti chili, e che ora sta qui, impara a fare l'elettricista e vuole farsi "tutto il programma della comunità - tre anni - anche se non sono tossicodipendente. Don Pierino? Per me è come un padre. E' un uomo buono. Mi ha salvato. Io credo solo a questo". Lo ripete anche Massimo D'Annibale, ex ospite della comunità, "salvato da don Pierino", e ora medico e padre di due ragazzi con un gran ciuffo di capelli davanti agli occhi, Patrizio e Matteo. E cosi è per le madri, i padri, le sorelle e i fratelli, gli ex ospiti della comunità, qualche nonna con il bastone, un padre che mostra orgoglioso il figlio che si dà fare per distribuire i piatti per il pranzo. Nessun dubbio, nessun piccolo dubbio? "Nessuno" assicurano. "Don Pierino, papà, è vittima di un imbroglio incomprensibile".

Dopo un giro allo zoo della Comunità Incontro - due poveri leoni, tre struzzi, due pecore thailandesi, un gruppo di lemuri, dei lama, scimmie, cigni e tanti altri animali per una pet terapy un tantino crudele - un'altra sigaretta, un caffè, ecco papà Pierino. Entra nella sala e parte un applauso. Racconta del suo viaggio in Bolivia e Costa Rica, dei suoi acciacchi - da un occhio non vede, ha un pace-maker e disturbi all'intestino - della fatica del viaggio. E del Vaticano. Alla fine dell'incontro, dopo aver baciato tutti i ragazzi che hanno voluto salutarlo, racconta ancora: "La decisione di ridurmi allo stato laico è stata solo mia. Io non appartengo alla diocesi di Terni: il vescovo di Terni, monsignor Paglia, che non ha alcuna giurisdizione su di me, per me è zero. Io appartengo alla chiesa cattolica melchita. Il mio superiore è il patriarca Gregorio III. Per me Paglia è solo il portalettere del Vaticano. Qui Paglia - continua don Pierino - non deve neanche provare a mettere piede. Non lo voglio più vedere.

Perche? Perche ho avuto la sensazione - ma anche l'informazione - che sia stato uno di quelli più solleciti a creare situazioni per me difficili e che ha avuto una parte negativa forse anche nella vicenda degli abusi". E' vero che si candiderà per il Senato? "Non so cosa farò". Da quale parte politica? "Non so ancora" sorride, sornione. "So che se servisse per la mia comunità, per i miei ragazzi, lo farei". E i ragazzi che l'accusano se non è vero niente perche lo fanno? "Perche sono tutti fuori di testa, ragazzi che non sono riusciti a fare niente, con dieci o venti anni di carcere alle spalle". Tutti? "Tutti. Peggio per loro. Non posso dire altro. Perche qualcosa, alla fine, dirà loro la vita stessa".

Something different is faith", the Rev. Gelmini says.

Then he adds: " Maneuvers aren't faith. We must return to Christ not to the Caesar-papism. We reached the point we speak more about the Pope than Christ". Gelmini is like a river about to overflow - now a former priest after the Vatican's decision to accept his request to be reduced to the lay state - when , yesterday afternoon, in the Incontro Community of Amelia, sitting on a high bench in a room frescoed with the history of the Community after the mural style of Mexico City, a microphone in his hands, is meeting with his boys.

And he speaks about the Vatican. At the end of the meeting, after having kissed all the boys who wanted to greet him, he tells more: "The decision to be reduced to the lay state was only mine. I don't belong to the Terni diocese: the bishop of Terni, monsignor Paglia, has no jurisdiction over me, to me he is zero. I belong to the Melkite Catholic church. My superior is the patriarch Gregory III. To me Paglia is only the postman of the Vatican. Here Paglia - the Rev. Pierino goes on - mustn't even dare to put his feet. I don't want to see him anymore.

Why? Because I perceived - but I got the information, too - that he was the most eager to create a difficult situation for me and that he played a negative part even perhaps in the abuses' story". Is it true you'll present your candidacy to the Senate for the forthcoming general election? " I don' know what I'll do". Which is your political side? " I don't know , yet" he answers with a sly smile. " I only know that if that would be useful for my community, for my boys, I would do that". And those boys who are accusing you, why are they doing that if it isn't true? " Because they are all out of their head, boys who weren't able to achieve anything, with ten or twenty years of jail on their back". All of them? "All of them. It will even be worse for them. I can't say more than that. Life itself will teach them something in the end".
