Supreme Court Upholds Dismissal of Woman's Sex Abuse Lawsuit WPRI February 9, 2008 http://www.wpri.com/Global/story.asp?S=7847220 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The state Supreme Court upholds the dismissal of a woman's lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by a Roman Catholic priest. Mary Ryan said she had been raped by a priest in 1982, ending a four year sexual relationship that began when she was 17 years old. She sued in 1995, and a judge dismissed it because he said it was filed after the statute of limitations had expired. The court agreed with that decision in its opinion yesterday. The priest she accused of raping her, Louis Dunn, was later convicted of first-degree sexual assault and given a suspended sentence. He died in 2001. Ryan is the only one of 38 alleged victims of sexual abuse in Rhode Island who did not join a $14.25 million settlement with the diocese in 2002. The court says in its decision that it feels genuine empathy for Ryan and considers her the victim of "heinous criminal conduct." |
