Where Are Their Children Buried? The Tribune February 9, 2008 http://www.wellandtribune.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=895395 Members of First Nations communities and their supporters are demanding to know what happened to thousands of aboriginal children who died at government- and church-sponsored residential schools. Letters have been sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the heads of the Anglican, Catholic and United churches of Canada asking them to disclose the locations of unmarked graves where the children were buried. Kevin Annett led protests at the offices of the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto and the Anglican Church of Canada, which will continue Sunday confronting the United Church of Canada. The protesters are using Access to Information laws to obtain the locations of the burial grounds and say they have also sent a letter to the Queen, through Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean. Annett is also demanding information on how the children died and wants a response within a month. The federal government estimates as many as 100,000 children attended residential schools, which have long been assailed as hotbeds of physical and sexual abuse and other human rights violations. |
