NEW HAVEN - Former Bishop Daniel A. Hart, who led the Norwich Diocese for over a decade and was the target of lawsuits stemming from the sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church, has died. He was 80.

He had been ill with cancer for six months, according to Diocese spokesman, Michael Strammiello.

Hart was born Aug. 24, 1927. He became an ordained priest in Boston in 1953 and was a vice chancellor in the Boston archdiocese.

Hart became the Bishop of Norwich in 1995 and resigned in 2003 at the age of 75, the mandatory retirement age.

In a lawsuit stemming from the abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church, Hart is accused of allowing a diocesan priest to sexually abuse and altar boy. He was also named in lawsuits filed in 2003 against the Roman Catholic Church's Boston archdiocese, where he was vice chancellor. The lawsuits alleged negligence by Hart and other supervisors of abusive priests for failing to protect victims.
