News in Brief Haaretz January 14, 2008 http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/944648.html The Jerusalem District Court ruled yesterday that Avrohom Mondrowitz, an ultra-Orthodox man who fled the United States for Israel two decades ago to avoid sexual abuse charges, must remain in custody until the end of legal proceedings against him. The United States seeks the extradition of Mondrowitz, 60, a member of the Gur Hasidic sect, and the court ruling stemmed from the suspicion he may attempt to escape Israel before his extradition. Mondrowitz was arrested in Jerusalem in November for allegedly abusing dozens of children at his unlicensed psychology clinic at his Brooklyn, New York, home during the 1980s. He fled to Israel in 1985. (Haaretz Staff) The safety of passengers on sex-segregated buses who do not wish follow the practice of men and women sitting separately must be ensured, Justices Yoram Danziger, Elyakim Rubinstein and Salim Joubran said yesterday. The justices were hearing a petition filed by author Naomi Ragen and the Israel Religious Action Center that claims that the current gender segregation on bus lines that cater chiefly to ultra-Orthodox Jews infringes on human rights. "A voluntary system that harms dozens or hundreds of women is impossible and the driver must ensure his passengers safety," Danziger said. The court will give its decision in a few days.(Yuval Yoaz) The Supreme Court will hold an expanded hearing of nine justices to decide whether government workers employed via a subcontractor can be tried as civil servants on public corruption charges, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch decided yesterday. Beinisch accepted State Prosecution Attorney Moshe Lador's request to hold a hearing over the sentence handed down to an official at the East Jerusalem Population Registry's office found guilty of taking bribes in return for shortening bureaucratic procedures. In a previous ruling, the man was not deemed a civil servant because he had been hired by a subcontractor. (Yuval Yoaz) |
