Q: Along a road near my home there's a tree that hangs out so far into the roadway that the branches scrape against my car as I drive by. The only way to avoid this is to steer into the oncoming lane if there are no cars coming. To whom can I report this?

A: Assuming the road is not the Yellow Brick Road and the touchy-feely tree is not a talking apple tree whose fruit you've just insulted, you can report the tree to one of two departments, depending on its location. City Arborist/Superintendent Shawn Dickerson of the Evansville Urban Forestry Department advises citizens to report troublesome trees within Evansville city limits to his department at 475-1426.

If the tree is in Vanderburgh County and outside Evansville's city limits, you can report it to the Vanderburgh County Highway Garage at 435-5777.

Q: Regarding the lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Indianapolis: During the time this stuff was going on, was Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger working in that diocese? Was he a parish priest or was he working in administration?

A: Gettelfinger was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in 1961, was named domestic prelate (in the vernacular, "monsignor," although that's not a title, but a form of address), and became bishop of the Diocese of Evansville in 1989.

In the interim — including the period when lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Indianapolis allege sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests at parishes within the Archdiocese took place — Gettelfinger served the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in various capacities. Over the years, he was an associate pastor and pastor, teacher, guidance counselor and principal at Bishop Chatard High School; the diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools; the rector of Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral; the Archdiocesan Chancellor and Vicar General.

Q: What are the phone numbers for the Indiana Do Not Call List and the National Do Not Call Registry?

A: Last week's question about stopping unwanted phone calls prompted some wanted phone calls from readers requesting more information about how to stop unwanted calls.

Here's the skinny: To register for the Indiana Do Not Call List, call 1-888-834-9969 toll free.

You'll be asked for some basic information, including your home phone number, name and address, but rest assured this is kept confidential and is used only to compile and manage the list.

The list is updated quarterly on Jan. 1, April 1, July 1 and Oct. 1, so once you have registered your phone number, you should receive fewer telemarketing calls after the next quarterly update.

To sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry, call 1-888-382-1222. You'll need to call from the number you wish to register. Telemarketers have up to 31 days to remove your number from their call lists.

Folks with phones lacking Automatic Number Identification (ANI) or who live in certain communities such as senior living centers or university residences may be unable to register by phone. They can sign up on the Internet at www.donotcall.gov.
