School Associated Press, carried in News Journal December 24, 2007 http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071224/NEWS/71224010 PHILADELPHIA – A priest has turned himself in on charges that he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Roman Catholic high school he led in Philadelphia. Prosecutors say audits show the Rev. Charles Newman stole $331,000 from Archbishop Ryan High School and more than $550,000 from his religious order. The 57-year-old Newman surrendered to the District Attorney's Office at 8 a.m. Monday. Authorities allege he used some of the money to ply a student he had molested with drugs and alcohol. Newman became president of Archbishop Ryan in July 2002 but was fired 15 months later when questions arose about his handling of school finances.
