The Jesuits have agreed to a $1.6 million settlement with the family of a Jesuit priest who committed suicide by leaping off a San Jose parking garage in 2004.

Rev. James Chevedden's family contended that the Jesuits didn't protect the mentally fragile priest, who grew distressed after he was allegedly molested by a fellow priest then forced to live in the same building with his alleged abuser.

The family says Rev. Charles Connor molested Chevedden in 1998, while the wheelchair-bound Chevedden was at Sacred Heart, a retirement center near Los Gatos recovering from injuries incurred when he jumped off scaffolding in a possible suicide attempt.
