JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two lawsuits against a church have been thrown out because claims stemming from child molestation charges against the church's late pastor were filed too late.

Circuit Judges Peter Fryefield and Charles Mitchell ruled that the women failed to meet a four-year statute of limitations and that each knew her abuser, the Florida Times-Union reported. Mitchell ruled on Oct. 23 and Fryefield's order was filed Thursday.

Robert Gray, the former pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, was charged in May 2006 with six counts of capital sexual battery involving four women.

The 81-year-old died last month before the cases went to trial.

The women's lawyer, Adam Horowitz, said Monday that he would appeal. A telephone message left after hours at his office by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

Similar decisions are pending in three other cases that were filed by women who claim they were sexually abused as children by Gray in the late 70s and early 80s.

Trinity attorney Edward Trent said he has similar motions pending with three other Jacksonville judges.

Telephone messages left after hours at Trent's office and at Trinity Baptist Church by AP were not immediately returned.
