PHOENIX - A priest awaiting trial on misdemeanor sex charges could be facing punishment from the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

Monsignor Dale Fushek (FYOO'-shek) defied his administrative suspension and led a non-denominational service in Mesa on Thanksgiving Day.

A diocese spokesman says officials are looking into the matter.

Fushek, who once was second in command at the Diocese of Phoenix, was placed on administrative leave in December 2004. That after he was accused in a lawsuit of watching while another priest engaged in sex with a boy.

The misdemeanor sex charges against Fushek stem from his relationship with five teenage boys between 1984 and 1993 at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Mesa.
