In an interview in today's Sun-Times the Reverend Donald McGuire, who was convicted of molesting two boys at Loyola Academy in the 1960s and now faces federal charges of traveling overseas with a minor to engage in sexual conduct, said that he's appealing an expulsion decree levied by Chicago Jesuits to the Vatican and that, regardless of Rome's final say, he will "always be a priest." This despite criticism from numerous people, including a nephew representing McGuire's accusers.

McGuire was suspended from publicly performing as a priest by the Chicago Jesuits four years ago. Citing confidentiality, sources could not confirm whether the Jesuits are seeking to expel McGuire from the priesthood. Defiant (some might say "oblivious") to his current situation, McGuire said that he hasn't been able to tell his side of the story on advice of legal counsel. When asked point blank if he ever molested children, McGuire declined comment.

McGuire is living in Oak Lawn under electronic monitoring while appealing the Wisconsin conviction. He's been jailed three times for violating the terms of his release. "I don't know what the future holds", he said. "I'm in God's hands." Better God's than the meaty mitts of the general population in prison, we suppose.
