NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Federal prosecutors are opposing a request by a priest to delay his sentencing for stealing from his church to support a lifestyle of high-class shopping and travel.

The Rev. Michael Jude Fay faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in December after he pleaded guilty last month to a federal fraud charge. He resigned last year as pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Darien.

He has asked to have his sentencing delayed until April, after he undergoes chemotherapy treatment for prostate cancer which has spread to his bones and lymph nodes and become resistant to traditional chemotherapy.

Prosecutors say if Fay is sentenced to prison, his reporting date can be delayed to accommodate medical treatments. Authorities also say the Bureau of Prisons can address his medical needs.

Prosecutors also say Fay's criminal activity began in 1999 and his victims should not have to wait any longer for justice.

A judge has not yet ruled on the request.
