	Boys' Town Abuse Claims: Court Hears Accusers' Tapes ABC October 10, 2007 http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/10/10/2055872.htm?section=justin A court has heard a priest accused of abusing students at a school in Sydney's south asked one of his alleged victims to tell staff he was not a paedophile. A committal hearing is being held in Sydney to determine whether Paul Evans will go to trial on 23 charges of child sex offences. Evans is accused of abusing three boys during the 1980s at Boys' Town, a Catholic school set up in Engadine to educate troubled teenagers, where he worked as a priest. A private investigator hired by the Catholic Church, Michael Eccleston, has given evidence at the hearing, playing tapes of interviews he did with the three alleged victims in 2004. In the interviews, the victims told of how Evans assaulted them regularly in their dormitories at night, as well as on weekends away. One of the men said a young student accused the priest of abuse at the time. He said the priest asked him to tell staff he was not like that. The alleged victim said he could not do it but still remained quiet at the time. The men told the investigator they decided to speak up because they were depressed, having breakdowns and wanted to move on.
