LOS ANGELES (Map, News) - Mounting financial pressures due partly to the settlement of hundreds of priest abuse cases have caused the Los Angeles Archdiocese to close a catholic high school.

The Daniel Murphy Catholic High School will shut down at the end of the academic year, the archdiocese told parents and students in a letter Friday.

The dioceses' financial woes compounded problems at the all boys school, which had been losing enrollment for more than a decade. The decision to close came after administrators realized they would have had to cut the curriculum to stay open, archdiocese spokesman Tod Tamberg said.

In all, 177 students will need to find new schools.

In July, the archdiocese announced a record $660-million settlement with the victims of hundreds of priest abuse cases. Up to $373 million will be paid directly by the archdiocese, with the rest coming from insurers and various religious orders.

Parents and students were surprised by the decision, and some said they planned to fight the closure.

"It was quite a shock for all the students and the teachers," said Rod Freer, whose son, Spencer, is a sophomore at the school.

The archdiocese has said it will sell up to 50 non-parish properties, including its administrative headquarters, to pay the settlements. The archdiocese also has sold a small convent in Santa Barbara, forcing several nuns to find a new home.
