Govindaswamy, the priest of Chengammal temple at Omalur, was handed over to police by villagers who chased and caught him following the rape attempt on Sunday evening, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar, said. The girl was playing in front of the temple when the priest took her inside the temple and attempted to molest her, he said. When the girl raised an alarm, the priest let her go after threatening to kill her if she told about it to anyone, he added. The girl, however, informed about the incident to her parents, who, along with their neighbours, caught the priest and handed him over to the police. The accused was produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to 15 days in custody.
