ST. Charles County – A former deacon at a church in Dardenne Prairie has been charged with sexually molesting a young member of the congregation.

Jerry Glenn Crabdree, 63, of the 1400 block of Quiver Drive in O'Fallon, fondled the girl several times over a six-month period in 2004 when the girl was 12 or 13, according to court paper filed late Friday.

The incidents came to light last month after the girl told her father and the church's pastor, the Rev. Dan Schmidt, about what happened, and they contacted the sheriff's department, said Lt. Craig McGuire.

"She was scared more than anything else and failed to say anything for awhile," McGuire said.

The sexual contact took place at several locations, McGuire said, including Dardenne Prairie Bible Church, 2300 Bates Road, where Crabdree was a deacon. It was not clear whether he still is an official at the church.

Another time, Crabdree and his wife took the girl shopping at the Home Goods Store at 3210 Costco Way, and he grabbed her under her skirt, McGuire said. In addition, authorities said Crabdree e-mailed to the girl about what he had done and then told her to destroy the e-mails so no one would find out what had happened.

Crabdree was not in custody late Monday, but a judge has set bail at $100,000 cash-only in the case. Crabdree could not be reached for comment.
