A former resident of the Neerkol Orphanage near Rockhampton, in central Queensland, is planning to write to the Pope over the Catholic Church's handling of the sexual abuse issue.

Garnett Williams says he was abused by a priest at Neerkol in the 1940s.

He says the Catholic Church's payout of about $1 million each to abuse victims in the United States is a slap in the face to Australian victims.

Mr Williams says the church in Australia has not done enough.

"I may be writing to His Holiness the Pope to explain to him that this is outrageous. I'm still a very devoted Catholic, a lot of people, they couldn't understand that, seeing that the priest abused me for five years," he said.

"The church in America has done probably an outstanding attempt to make this contribution and a better quality of life for these children."
