A jury considering the case of a priest accused of funding the grooming of a young girl for sex was told today that a majority verdict would be accepted.

Father Jeremiah McGrath, 63, of Rosslea, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, denies three counts of facilitating a child sex offence and one count of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court heard allegations that McGrath gave thousands of pounds to his friend, a convicted child abuser, who used the cash to shower treats and gifts on the 12-year-old girl in Liverpool and Blackpool.

The priest claimed the cash was linked to gambling and he had no idea his friend was having sex with the girl over a six-month period in 2005.

Judge Brian Lewis told the jury today that he would accept a majority verdict of at least 10-2.
