A jury in Liverpool is expected to retire later today to consider its verdict in the case of a Co Fermanagh-born priest accused of facilitating the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Fr Jeremiah McGrath, aged 63, allegedly gave money to William Adams, 38, a convicted paedophile originally from Belfast, to buy gifts to groom the girl for sex.

He admits having a sexual relationship with Adams, whom he knew had a previous conviction for raping another girl in Ireland.

Fr McGrath is accused of sexually abusing the 12-year-old Liverpool girl and of giving Adams cash knowing or suspecting he was grooming her for sexual purposes.

Adams subsequently raped the girl a number of times.

Fr McGrath denies three counts of facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.

His defence says he was a foolish old man, but that the cash movements were linked to his gambling addiction.
