New Rochelle - The Rev. Thomas Doyle, who tried to get Catholic leaders to confront sex abuse in the church during the 1980s and went on to become a leading advocate for victims of abuse by priests, will speak at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in New Rochelle.

Doyle will address a meeting of the Upper Room and Voice of the Faithful, two Catholic lay groups. His talk will be: "Clergy Abuse: Crisis or Pattern? It's Not Over Till It's Over."

The meeting will take place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 10 Mill Road.

In 1985, Doyle, a Dominican priest and canon lawyer, worked for the U.S. bishops conference and studied the problem of sexual abuse. He urged the bishops to adopt new policies on the matter, all but predicting the crisis that would arise in 2002.

Doyle remained critical of the Catholic hierarchy through the years, and many believe that he has been ostracized by the church. He served as an Air Force chaplain from 1986 until 2003, when he was removed.

He continues to speak about sex-abuse in the church.

Last year, Doyle co-authored "Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes: The Catholic Church's 2,000-Year Paper Trail of Sexual Abuse."
