December 2002: State prosecutors settle with diocese, averting criminal charges. Settlement terms call for annual audits of the church's sexual-abuse prevention policies. May 2004: After months of legal wrangling between the state and church over the scope and cost of the audits, the church asks a judge to force the state to begin its first audit. March 2005: Siding with the state, a judge orders the church to submit to a thorough audit of its policies and to split the cost of it with the state. Summer 2005: Auditing firm KPMG begins the first audit of the diocese. March 30, 2006: State releases audit results, saying diocese has failed to ensure criminal background checks have been done on staff and volunteers who work with children; diocese given 30 days to submit a plan to fix the problems. |
