Franciscan Friar Arrested on Child-Porn Charges By Omar El Akkad Globe and Mail [Canada] April 24, 2007 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070424.BROTHER24/TPStory/National A Franciscan friar faces multiple child-pornography charges after Toronto police raided a Roman Catholic church in Scarborough. Brother Adley Lobo, 24, had been affiliated with both St. Francis Friary in Caledon and St. Lawrence Martyr Church in Toronto, according to police. Brother Lobo became the subject of an undercover police investigation into individuals suspected of downloading child pornography from the Internet. The investigation eventually led to a raid yesterday, when members of the Child Exploitation Section of Toronto Police's Sex Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at St. Lawrence Martyr Church. Brother Lobo now stands accused of two counts of possession of child pornography, one count of making child pornography and another count of making child pornography available. He was scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Ave. East yesterday afternoon. According to a newsletter published by the Franciscan friars of the Province of the Immaculate Conception, Brother Lobo is originally from Bombay, India, but has lived in Toronto for about 10 years. The newsletter states he spent one year studying business administration at the University of Toronto, and in May of 2005 he was to be awarded a Bachelor of Christian Thought from St. Philip Neri Seminary in Toronto. For at least the past seven years, he had been doing various jobs at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, including as general help and as an altar server. "I am attracted to the simple life of the friars and service to God and to others," Brother Lobo was quoted as saying in the newsletter. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Janet Sullivan of the Sex Crimes Unit at 416-808-7707, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or online at http://www.222tips.com. |
