Abuse Survivors Dedicate Monument Associated Press, carried in WOI April 24, 2007 http://www.woi-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=6412956&nav=1LFX Grand Mound, Iowa The eastern Iowa town of Grand Mound has dedicated a monument to victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests. Seven abuse victims were among 100 people who attended yesterday's ceremony outside S-S Philip and James Catholic Church. Parishioners and members of a group called Catholics for Spiritual Healing raised the four-thousand dollars for the monument. The church's pastor, the Reverend David Brownfield, says the event marks a start for the community's healing and shows support for those "who've been harmed by people we trusted." The church was the last stop in the 40-year career of James Janssen. He was accused of sexually assaulting about a dozen boys in six parishes over three decades. Janssen was defrocked in 2004. |
