Parents Say Boy Told of Priest Abuse Mom Says Son Sent to Defendant for Counseling By Sue Lindsay Rocky Mountain News [Golden CO] April 4, 2007 http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_5462660,00.html Former priest Timothy Evans went to the devout Catholic family's home for dinners, blessed the home, prayed with the family - and sexually assaulted their son during counseling sessions, a Jefferson County jury was told Tuesday. Evans, 43, convicted last week in Fort Collins on a similar charge, is on trial in Jefferson County District Court this week on a charge of fondling a 17-year-old boy who was sent to the priest by his parents for counseling in 1996 after they found a witchcraft book in his backpack. The parents said they were concerned about their son's interest in a movie about devil worship and witchcraft, prompting them to set up the counseling sessions. But after the first session, the boy told his parents that Evans made him uncomfortable. When the boy told the priest he was self-conscious about his body, he said Evans complimented his "big barrel chest" and rubbed it. The boy was upset when he came home after the first session, his mother said. "'Mom,' he said, 'I don't think what he is doing to me is normal,' " his mother testified, wiping her tears. "I made him go back. I just thought he was trying to get out of counseling." But the parents cut off the sessions after the second meeting, when the boy came home in tears saying that Evans had him lay on the floor and touched him all over his body. The boy's father said he was "very angry and in disbelief." In June 2003, his father reported the abuse at a church retreat at which the issue of sexual abuse by priests was discussed. Defense attorney Joseph Gabaldon said Evans did nothing improper with the boy and that his story grew after he heard there were other allegations of abuse. But the boy, now in his 20s, said he didn't know about the other cases. Two other young men testified Tuesday that they were similar victims of abuse. lindsays@RockyMountainNews.com or 303-954-5181 |
