Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events Set University of Delaware [Newark DE] April 3, 2007 http://www.udel.edu/PR/UDaily/2007/apr/awareness040307.html 2:58 p.m., April 3, 2007 — UD will observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April with lectures, films and more. The programs aim to educate the campus community about sexual assault crimes around the country and discuss ways to prevent them from happening here. Resource booths will be set up from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. every Monday in April, in the Trabant University Center. The month's film series kicks off with Deliver Us From Evil, an Academy Award-nominated documentary about the human cost of rape and abuse, sponsored by SCPAB, with special guest facilitator the Rev. Thomas Doyle, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. National Day to End Sexual Violence will be observed on Thursday, April 5, and UD community members are encouraged to show their support for survivors by wearing the free Sexual Assault Awareness shirts available at the kiosk in Trabant. "Moving Beyond 'No Means No,' Talking About 'What Means Yes': Men's Role in Ending Sexual Assault," begins at 7 p.m. in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. The program will focus on what women can do to keep from being assaulted and is sponsored by MARS (Men Against Rape Society). On Monday, April 9, "Sex Signals", sponsored by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, will address the issues of dating, sex and date rape on college campuses, using humor and improv to engage the audience at 6 p.m., in Multipurpose Rooms A and B of the Trabant University Center. The films Small Justice and Breaking the Silence will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Susan Miller, professor of sociology and criminal justice, will facilitate a discussion after the films. Kristine, a 21-year-old student from Penn State, will speak out about being raped and how she overcame challenges while trying to cope and become a survivor at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, in the Collins Room of the Perkins Student Center. "Rock Against Rape", sponsored by MARS, will feature several bands playing to help put an end to sexual assault, at 8 p.m., Friday, April 13, in the Bacchus Theatre of the Perkins Student Center. Tickets will be sold at the door and all proceeds will go to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner's Unit at Christiana Hospital. Phi Sigma Pi will sponsor the "Kick the Silence Kickball Tournament" at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 14, at Frazer Field behind the Carpenter Sports Building to raise money to benefit the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) and a local rape crisis agency. "A Walk in My Shoes" is set for 1 p.m., Saturday, April 14, in Dover, starting at Kent General Hospital. This is a national campaign to promote the awareness and prevention of sexual violence, sponsored in Delaware by the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware and ContactLifeLine. Bettina Aptheker, author of Intimate Politics, will speak about the significance of feminist autobiography and the continuing reclamation of women's history at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 16, in 117 Gore Hall. Transamerica, starring Desperate Housewives' Felicity Huffman, portrays a transgendered woman who realizes she fathered a son years ago while still a man, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. Richie Holland, human resources and affirmative action manager and instructor in the Women's Studies Program, will facilitate a discussion after the film. This event is sponsored by VDay. "Women, Pop Music, and Pornography," a multimedia presentation by singer/songwriter Meredith Levande will be screened at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. It will look at representations of women pop stars in popular music videos and media images that contribute to the mainstreaming of pornography. Sponsored by SAGE (Students Acting for Gender Equality). Open-Mic Night at the Consent Café, sponsored by DUSC (Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress), will feature performances by Innocence Bello and other local artists, at 8 p.m., Friday, April 20, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. "Sex and Excess: Surviving the Party" with Elaine Pasqua will present an interactive, lively, open discussion, encouraging students to think about long-term consequences such as STDs and drug-facilitated rape before engaging in high-risk behaviors. The event will take place at 7 p.m., Monday, April 23, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center and is sponsored by V8. The film Senorita Extraviada (Missing Young Women), which tells the story of hundreds of kidnapped, raped and murdered young women of Juarez, Mexico, will be screened at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, in the Trabant University Center Theatre, with a discussion afterwards facilitated by Sue Cherrin, professor of women's studies and Claudia Rodriguez, president of HOLA. Sponsored by HOLA and Lambda Pi Chi. A Victim's Tribute, sponsored by the Delaware Victims' Rights Task Force, will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, in Dover at the Modern Maturity Center on Forrest Avenue. The exhibit will include a collection of T-shirts created by victims of sexual assault, memorial walls which display letters, poems, and artwork submitted by crime victims and family members, the Silent Witness project and resource information. "A Walk in My Shoes" will be displayed from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26, on the Trabant University Center Patio. Sponsored by the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware, each pair of shoes shares the story of a survivor of sexual abuse. "Take Back the Night" march and Speak-Out, lead by SAGE, will be held to raise awareness about sexual violence and to assert the right to be safe on campus and in the community. Marchers are invited to meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, April 26, on the Old College steps for the rally, and in the Ewing Room of Perkins for the speak-out immediately after the march. "Why Doesn't She Just Leave" an interactive simulation of a relationship, is set for 8 p.m., Monday, April 30, in the Independence Lounge of the George Read Residence Hall. Participants will be placed in a dating situation and asked to make some crucial decisions. The presenters will be grad student Leigh Fine and Angela Seguin, program coordinator in UD's Center for Counseling and Student Development.
