Francis Mugerwa Kibaale

A Priest who was arrested by police on March 23 has denied allegations of adultery against him.

Esau Abwomugisha, attached to Kigezi Diocese, is detained at Kagadi Police Station. The Rev. Abwomugisha on Monday told Daily Monitor that a person with high moral values like him cannot have a marital affair with a married woman.

Kibaale Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department Fred Mirondo said the Rev. Abwomugisha is suspected to have had an affair with a married woman Molly Abomugisa.

He said preliminary investigations proved that Ms Abomugisha is married to Alex Nyabugaba of Kagadi town.

Mr Mirondo said Mr Abwomugisha was arrested in Mabaale Boys Lodge at about 10: 00 am after a tip off.

He claims the Rev. Abwomugisha committed adultery.

Allegations malicious

The Rev. Abwomugisha said the allegations against him are false, malicious and intended to tarnish his reputation.

He described Ms Abomugisa as a friend and fellow Ugandan. He said he visited Kibaale on March 23 to tour the district.

"I was told the district has good environmental features which are interesting to see," Mr Abwomugisha said.

He said he contacted Ms Abomugisa to help him locate the best geographical features which he would visit while in the district. "She came to my room for that purpose," he said.

Surprise

The Rev. Abwomugisha said he was surprised when policemen knocked his on door and said he was under arrest for adultery. He said he is not afraid of being prosecuted because he is 'innocent'.

Ms Abomugisa, who is also detained at Kagadi Police Station, declined to talk to the press. Mr Nyabugaba said the incident is 'unfortunate, painful and unacceptable'.

He said he wants the law to take its course on the suspects.

Mr Mirondo said the suspects would be produced in court after interrogation.
