Clergy Sex Abuse Lawsuit Goes Forward My Fox Colorado March 27, 2007 http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=2779925&version=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1 Denver — A judge has refused to halt a lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Denver filed by three men who allege they were sexually abused by a priest when they were children. The archdiocese had asked for summary judgment in its favor on grounds the men had waited too long to sue. In a ruling dated yesterday, Denver District Judge John McMullen disagreed. He says church attorneys had cited legal precedents that don't apply to this case. The men who sued have been identified only as John Does Three, Five and Six. They allege the archdiocese was negligent in the way it supervised the priest, Harold Robert White. The lawsuit says the men were abused between 1960 and 1974. White died in November at age 73 after a heart attack. He had served in eleven Colorado parishes but had been removed from public ministry and then left the priesthood. White had said the allegations against him contained "half-truths." At least 18 people who said they were sexually abused by White and another Colorado priest have settled their claims against the archdiocese for a total of at least $1.58 million. As many as 20 lawsuits are still pending. |
