Fort Collins, Colo. (AP) — A former Roman Catholic priest was convicted Monday of charges of sexually assaulting a young parishioner.

Timothy Joseph Evans, 44, was convicted of two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse.

He showed no emotion as the verdict was read. He could face up to life in prison at his sentencing, scheduled May 30.

Evans' attorney, Andy Gavaldon, and victims' family members declined to comment.

He was removed from parish ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church in Fort Collins in 2002 and his priestly faculties were removed in 2003.

Evans faces a separate trial in Jefferson County on April 2 on accusations he fondled a 16-year-old boy between 1995 and 1997 while assigned to Spirit of Christ Parish in Arvada.

During the Fort Collins trial, a man testified he was molested twice as a teenager in 1999 in the rectory where Evans lived. The man said in one instance, Evans pinned him down, fondled him and reached toward his genital region while they were wrestling. In the other instance, the man said, Evans grabbed the man's buttocks.

Evans' defense had painted the allegations as those of a man acting out of anger toward a priest who tried to help him.

After the verdict, Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput expressed sorrow for anyone harmed by Evans.

"The Archdiocese of Denver does not tolerate (permit or allow) any priest in ministry in the archdiocese with a credible claim of sexual abuse of a minor against him," Chaput said in a written statement.
