Jury selection in the trial of a former Fort Collins priest accused of sexually molesting a minor is expected to finish up this morning with opening statements to take place later in the day.

Timothy Joseph Evans, 43, pleaded innocent in December to charges stemming from incidents alleged to have occurred with a teenager during his tenure at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 5450 S. Lemay Ave., where he served from 1998 to 2002.

The remaining jury pool of 28 candidates is expected to be whittled to 12 by mid-morning before opening statements are made.

EVANS

District Court Judge Jolene Blair expects the trial to take a week.

Evans is accused of having sexual contact with a boy in the parish who was between the ages of 15 and 18 on separate incidents between September 1998 and 1999. He is accused of supplying the youth with alcohol on at least one occasion.

Charges against Evans include two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, one count of sexual assault on a child - pattern abuse and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Evans also faces charges in Jefferson County of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust - pattern abuse from an incident alleged to have happened during his time at Spirit of Christ Parish in Arvada from May 1995 to May 1997.

That Jefferson County trial is set for April 2. Evans remains free on $100,000 bond.

Evans was removed from the church in 2002, according to the Archdiocese of Denver. Parishioners were not told why Evans was removed.
