Lawyer Wants Evidence Declared " Protected" in Warren Jeffs Case KSL [Utah] March 14, 2007 http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=987162 (KSL News) Lawyers for polygamous leader Warren Jeffs are trying to get evidence against him declared protected under the First Amendment. When FBI agents arrested Jeffs, they found four laptop computers, 16 cell phones, 19 pre-paid debit cards, 13 religious books and many other items. His lawyer argues, "The government's retention of these sacred materials offends the most basic principles of the FLDS religion and violates Mr. Jeffs's rights under the First Amendment and Religious Freedom Restoration Act." He says the government broke an earlier agreement to share the documents, and he is asking the documents be sealed and not released to a third party. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney for Utah says the court is reviewing the motion. Jeffs faces trial for rape as an accomplice. |
