DET-Sgt Campbell Davis spends 90 per cent of his working life in front of a computer doing some of policing's dirtiest work.

As head of the Victoria Police internet child exploitation team, the father of two is almost daily subjected to images of the most despicable abuse of minors.

It is the job of his team to catch those Victorians who view and, by paying for it, support the vile industry.

The officers are also charged with identifying and prosecuting those using the internet to groom and sexually assault the young.

The job is sickening, but satisfying when results are achieved.

"We've had some cases lately where we've got tangible evidence we've prevented contact sex offences happening," Det-Sgt Davis said.

"It certainly took me some time to get used to it. It's a difficult part of your daily life. I would say viewing that kind of material motivates you to work harder and get the desired results."

Det-Sgt Davis said there were many things children and parents needed to be aware of to thwart cyber perverts.

He said children should never give out personal information or forward pictures of themselves to people they did not know or trust.

Det-Sgt Davis said that if a young person must meet someone they'd met on the internet, they should always go with a friend and tell others where they were going.

He said parents should try to get more involved with their children's internet use and put the family computer in a living area of the house.
