Omaha, Neb. — An Omaha church worked Sunday to move beyond the resignation of its pastor amid embezzlement allegations.

The Rev. Stephen J. Gutgsell was investigated by the Archdiocese internally. An audit showed that $100,000 is missing, the news release said. The matter was handed over to Omaha police on Friday morning.

Gutgsell resigned and is on administrative leave, according to the Archdiocese.

On Sunday, an assistant pastor leading the St. Patrick's congregation addressed last week's disclosures in his Sabbath homily, speaking of theologians' writings on church scandal. He also said forgiveness for those who do wrong is imperative in church teachings.

Later during the service, newly appointed pastor Rev. Jim Buckley spoke of his hopes for the parish's future. A special section of the parish bulletin distributed within the church Sunday also expressed hope.

"While they were shocked, surprised, hurt by this news," said the Rev. Joe Taphorn, "I think they also have the right attitude of, 'We need to move on. We need to do the right thing henceforth.'"

After Sunday's services, parishioners were reluctant to talk. One said he was tired of the negative publicity surrounding the church and just wanted a new start. Another praised Gutgsell's work during his time at St. Patrick's, and said he was praying for him.

Gutgsell has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
