Rancho Santa Margarita– The principal of the private Santa Margarita Catholic High School has been placed on leave for failing to respond appropriately to concerns about a religion teacher, officials for the Diocese of Orange said.

An investigation into the actions of Principal Lawrence Monroe and teacher Eric Hansen continues, said Ryan Lilyengren, a spokesman for the diocese. He wouldn't comment about what is being investigated, when the inquiry began or whether law enforcement is involved.

"We can't comment further until the effort is complete. … We're trying to get it done as quickly as possible," he said.

An e-mail sent to parents of students at the school referred only to "concerns" related to European tours led by Hansen, who this year taught courses on art history, philosophy and applied spirituality. It asked parents with questions or information about the tours to contact a private investigator hired by the diocese.

The e-mail continued, "Brother Lawrence Monroe has been placed on administrative leave at this time for failure to follow diocesan policy in responding to these concerns."

It was signed by Gerald Horan, superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese.
