The Rosado Documents from the Bridgeport Diocesan Files

The documents released by the Diocese of Bridgeport under court order on December 1, 2009 were not redacted. They contained the names of many survivors who have not gone public. Before posting the documents, we redacted survivors' names if we were not able to verify that they had made their allegations public, either by filing a civil suit or by sharing their account with a reporter in a published story. We also redacted the names of several survivors who are public, if the documents describe their abuse in disturbing detail not previously accessible to the public.

In one instance, the social security number of an accused priest has been redacted, and home addresses and phone numbers have been redacted as well.

In order to lose as little information as possible in the redaction process, we have substituted a unique code for each name. This is a better way to redact than simply blacking out the name. With our method, the reader can easily see that two documents are about the same survivor, as is the case, for example, with redaction M-024 in Exhibits 38 and 40. The following list of redaction codes provides a brief description of each person whose name is redacted, indicates which documents the name occurs in, and provides the Bates number of each page containing a redacted name.
