Assignment Record
Last Updated April 19, 1989
The official record of Rev. Joseph E. Birmingham records his assignment as
Juvenile Court Chaplain in the Brighton Municipal Court. It also logs transfers
that coincide with abuse allegations:
- On 11/16/64 he was transferred from Our Lady of Fatima in Sudbury to St. James
in Salem. This transfer was decided in an 11/4/64 chancery meeting
about two abuse allegations.
- On 2/2/70 he was transferred from St. James in Salem to St. Michael's in Lowell.
This transfer occurred about two weeks after a letter from a
priest detailed allegations.
- On 2/17/87 he was removed from St. Ann's in Gloucester, placed on sick leave,
and sent to the Institute for Living, three days after he admitted
to Bishop Banks on 2/14/87 that he had sexually abused a boy at St. Ann's.
