Chicago cardinal says process for removing accused priests inadequate

CHICAGO (IL)
WREG

CHICAGO The leader of Roman Catholics in Chicago is promising to do a better job protecting parishioners from abusive priests.

Cardinal Francis George acknowledges that he should have acted sooner to remove a priest who's charged with abusing three boys. Under current policy, allegations are investigated before a priest is removed. George is planning changes under which priests would be removed immediately.

He also says he's going to consult with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to make sure that communities are told when a priest is suspended.
